Global enterprises are no longer asking if they should set up shop in India. They're asking how fast they can do it, and how much ownership they should keep. That shift has a name: the Global Capability Center, or GCC.

What is a Global Capability Center? 

A Global Capability Center is a fully owned offshore unit that a multinational company sets up to run critical business functions from a different country, usually India. Unlike a vendor-run outsourcing setup, the parent company owns the entity, the talent, culture, and the intellectual property. 

Earlier when GCCs entered India, they started as back-office support units only. Today, as the demand has gone high, they also run product engineering, AI research, cybersecurity, finance, digital transformation, and R&D. You may also see them called captive centers, Global In-house Centers (GICs), or shared service centers. The model a company chooses to run one typically falls into three types: Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), Captive (Fully owned Subsidiary), and Hybrid (explained further below). 

What is the main purpose of a GCC? 

The honest answer isn't "cost savings" anymore, even though that's still real (typically 40-60% lower operating costs than onshore). The main purpose of a GCC today is control over capability: building a team that thinks and builds like the parent company, not a vendor working off a contract. 

A GCC gives you direct control over hiring, IP, data, and delivery quality. That control is what lets a GCC evolve from a support function into a genuine innovation hub, something an outsourced vendor relationship structurally can't offer.

A full-scale, multi-function center with its own legal entity, leadership hires, and infrastructure typically takes about 6 to 9 months from decision to first day of operations. 

The timeline depends on three things: whether you're setting up a legal entity or using a build-operate-transfer model, how fast you can close leadership hires, and how quickly compliance and real estate move. A clear operating model decided upfront shortens all three. 

What are some GCC Models? 

Most companies choose from a handful of proven models: 

  • Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT): a partner builds and runs the center, then hands over full ownership once it's stable 

  • Captive (Fully-owned Subsidiary) — the parent company owns and runs the center from day one, with full control over talent, IP, and operations 

  • Hybrid model — a mix of in-house and partner-managed functions, letting you scale specific capabilities faster without building everything yourself

Life sciences and pharma firms are centralizing R&D and IT operations, as seen in Eisai's 2026 Global Capability Centre in Visakhapatnam, built around digital transformation and IT infrastructure standardization. Manufacturing and automotive players are using GCCs for engineering and demand forecasting. Retail, FMCG, and hospitality are newer entrants, drawn in by the same talent depth that built India's IT industry.

Pune and Hyderabad have carved out strong reputations of their own, Pune for product engineering and manufacturing-tech talent, Hyderabad for enterprise platforms and large transformation programs. Recent entrants like Carl Zeiss chose Bengaluru for exactly this reason, opening a GCC there in 2026 with plans to double its India workforce to 5,000 within three years.
